CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Yuzuru Otonashi
Character Canon: Angel Beats!
History: Here!

AU History: Several months have passed since the death of his remaining family member, Hatsune.

Yuzuru knows, logically, that his father must live on somewhere for any money to come through and for Hatsune's hospital stay to have ever been covered for as long as it was, but he finds that even with that assistance, he can hardly call the man a father. NAME Otonashi's only daughter had passed away, and only Yuzuru himself had been physically there for her. He attended the funeral with only few friends and Hatsune's doctors.

In the few years leading up to her passing, Yuzuru witnessed Hatsune slowly succumbing to the same destructive hereditary disease that had taken their mother. With resources as scarce as they were and humanity still recovering from its losses, finding an adequate donor, preserving their vital internal organs, and replacing the disease-ravaged ones of Hatsune simply wasn't feasible. Even if all the technology and practice to achieve this feat emerged overnight, nobody could say with any certainty that the vicious sickness would not simply latch onto the donor organs.

And so the two siblings lived on a false hope that maybe, just maybe, something would come through. Only disappointment and devastation greeted them.

In the December months, against the recommendation of her nurses and doctor, Yuzuru brought her warm clothing and absconded with her to fulfill his promise to get her out to see the city covered in snow. She had expressed nothing but joy at the prospect, driving Yuzuru to unintentionally accelerate her death. Her frailty, combined with the harsh weather conditions, resulted in her passing before Yuzuru even got to take her out for her first meal out of the hospital in years, before their snow angels, before anything he had sworn he would do for her. She saw the snow, thanked him, and succumbed.

Hatsune had been one of the only people he lived for. With his mother's passing came withdrawal and mistrust of most others his age. Yuzuru possessed acquaintances here and there, and carried a long-standing friendship with Shino Asada, whom he had met at her father's funeral service.

Canon Personality: Yuzuru Otonashi, overall, is a selfless teenage boy with an unshakeable belief in morality and the innate goodness in other human beings, which tends to serve him well in the long-term. He may not get along with everyone he meets and is far from quiet about being pushed around, but he consistently seeks to find the best in those around him. Introverted by nature, he seems comparatively quiet and aloof compared to his companions in the Shinda Sekai Sensen, or Afterlife Battlefront (often abbreviated the SSS, or class 3S). Still, many of the battlefront's members consider him a positive addition to the team, with only a couple of distinct exceptions (most notably, Noda, and Fujimaki early on). Most either were taken with him quickly and sympathized with his confusion, despised him and his complaining to the point of threatening to kill him (or actually doing it!), or simply had no opinion at all.

Some of his dead teammates are shown to openly share their histories as examples or justification for their rebellion against the believed "god" in the afterlife, while others confide exclusively in him about their pain. A precursor coming to that specific afterlife, after all, is an unjust life with a lingering and significant regret. By the time the struggles of the battlefront began to come to a close, he had made a peace or neutrality of sorts with those who disliked him in the beginning, or a completely profound effect that enabled the other members to fulfill their regrets and move on. Otonashi may not talk much about himself, but he desires to be open for others; helping someone heal from their past, or even just offering a listening ear, is something that keeps him going.

Overall, his nature is a dictionary-definition good, but he does struggle with a temper sometimes and is not the most flexible person in the world. He shows a degree of quiet meekness with extremely outgoing people, though he tends to have the greatest social chemistry with these passionate individuals. Generally, he has a lot of thoughts on his companions in the SSS—some positive, some not so much—but he tends to keep any harsh commentary specifically about other individuals to himself. There are a few instances of very obvious preference and concern for certain members of the group—those he holds closest, presumably—but as far as critiques of character or intelligence go, he tends to try bite his tongue. ("Try" is important here, sometimes he mutters his opinion anyway or gives the "offending" person quite a disapproving look.) That said, it doesn't mean he never openly criticizes; he is extremely critical of some of the methodology the SSS employs, such as breaking into a girl's room or stealing meal tickets, but he does ease up somewhat as time goes on.

If something seems immoral he will typically say so, or at the very least he will think it and struggle with his acceptance of it. His extreme cautiousness falls to the wayside as he begins to see that the SSS, though unorthodox and not always right, only wants to seek justice and compensation for their painful lives. It is his new perspective on their enemy, "Angel," that shows the SSS that bloodbaths and fighting against each other will not bring peace, nor is it fair to Angel--to Kanade, rather--who is essentially just like them in seeking a way to fulfill some kind of regret or wish.

In short, he respects others, has too much love to give, but doesn't always understand other people and sometimes prefers to stand off to the side and monologue to himself than interact with a large group. If a motivational speech is needed though, Otonashi gladly rises to meet the need, driven either by his humanitarian nature, his love for those around him, or a healthy mixture of both. He may not be a perfect hero and struggles a bit with when to be cautious and when to be stupidly bold, but his unconventional strength has come in handy in the past—both alive and post-death.

AU Deviation: (The nature of the AU is such that the character's personal history will be different, be it in simple or dramatic ways. Due to a much different upbringing, we expect there to be at least some variation, even if small. Spend at least one paragraph detailing in what ways the character differs from their canon incarnation.)

Canon Abilities: Due to spending nearly the entirety of his canon in an afterlife, he and all of his castmates were impervious to sickness and any lasting death. The world itself granted these immunities, as well as an accelerated healing rate.

He also developed an adeptness with firearms, ranging from small handguns to sniper rifles. And although he never used any of his medical knowledge due to the world having no use for someone who knew things like CPR or how to effectively bandage wounds, he had very rudimentary skill in dealing with injuries as well.

Enlightened Abilities: (While your character will not have access to their canon abilities, they will instead gain access to up to two Pokémon types as outlined here: http://www.serebii.net/xy/typechart.shtml

Through these types, they will be able to take on an ability set that can mimic their canon abilities. Additionally, they will gain access to special trainer abilities as detailed here: http://bravenewmods.dreamwidth.org/715.html

While describing this section, a good format would be to describe initial abilities and the way the abilities will develop after the first and second evolutions.

If your character has no canon powers, they may still be an Enlightened. However, we ask that the abilities you choose generally make some sense for the character, whether it's related to personality or other canon considerations.

While complex vehicles are beyond the technology level of Union, characters may, as part of their overall composition, use Enhanced items that have aspects of an available Pokémon. A character may begin with a single Enhanced item, such as a sword that contains the Fire type. This is generally recommended to be similar to something they use in canon.)

Starter Pokémon: Eevee. However, he will not be using Pokémon of his own very often, if ever.

Notes/Special Considerations: I think the only special considerations are that I would like for him to not use Pokémon on account of him thinking it's just not right to order someone/something else to fight for him. He might be more willing to strategize with another character/Pokémon, but not specifically call it in to fight unless he had absolutely no other choice. It's similar to how, in canon, he did not want to ask Kanade specifically to go back to battling the SSS, only to play the part of a disruptive antagonist without actually hurting anyone.

Also, I've talked out a plot involving Otonashi and Shino ([personal profile] sharpeyedshooter) with Shino-mun! We don't have all the details ironed out yet, but the framework of it is that the two teenagers will go out on an exploration where Shino will encounter a fire Pokemon that triggers her fear and causes her to pass out. Otonashi will drag her out of the rough situation they've found themselves in, but will suffer from some kind of serious injury(ies?) that will result in retrograde amnesia. Otonashi spends half of his canon as an amnesiac (with a very fictional flair, of course), so we plan to make it a throwback to that with some more... realistic changes. He may forget how to write, for example, or have to relearn some fine motor skills. However, he may also remember vague things about himself beyond just his name alone (which is what canon did, sort of).

SAMPLES
(NOTE: You may link a previous entry or thread, including testrun or musebox threads (but NOT Dear Mun), for one or both samples. However, we want to see the character in the setting of Brave New World and specifically in their AU for at least one sample.)

First-Person: Musebox thread with Shino in the BNW setting!

Third-Person: (This is written in prose from an independent narrator’s perspective. Here we want to see an insight into your character’s unspoken behavior -- actions, thoughts, their view of their world, etc. The minimum here is two paragraphs. If we do not get a good sense of your character’s behavior, we will ask for more. If you link an outside entry or thread, the minimum is 20 comments from your character in two threads/with two characters.)

If desired, you may answer some of the following questions. The questions must be answered in-character, as if they are being asked by a teacher, mentor, or superior. If your character is lying in their answer, please identify it as a lie, the purpose of these is to get an idea of how you will play your character in lieu of the other sample options. 4 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a first-person sample, and 6 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a third-person sample. Both samples may be replaced in this manner. If the character doesn't say enough in their answer, we may request a few more answers for an acceptable sample.

-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
-What do you feel your role in Union is?

-What do you seek for humanity’s future?

-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
"Any!" The words burst from his lips before he can completely process what he intends to say afterwards, leaving him to muffle a series of staccato gasps and mutters, all of which come in a similar rapid-fire fashion. Just as quickly as the rush comes, he moves to straighten up from his usual slight slouch, his expression steeling. "There aren't a lot of people left in this world who mean something to me. If they are allies of mine, then they're worth my life. Even if they're not allies of mine, they don't deserve to be left behind."

-What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?

-What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
Here, he looks rather disinterested and detached. "It's... an old story." Figuring that this might not suffice as an answer, he crosses his arms and looks right past the interrogator as if searching for a more eloquent response somewhere in the background. "It's a story of mistakes. It's a story to share, and to learn from. It's what happens when you don't try to understand others..." REVISE

-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
"Ah... this is confidential, right?" He glances around briefly. "Right... Dedication, loyalty, and passion. Strength, too, but that can come with dedication. I've seen it happen. Anyone who knows why they're here, what they're fighting for, and why they're living... I respect them. They're my reason to be."

-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
-What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
-The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
-You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
-When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
-What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity?
-What strengths make you most qualified for your role within Union?

-In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.

-No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?

-What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
